Our activities

  • Bringing academic experts and industry partners together to deliver cutting-edge hydrogen research and innovation at the University’s state-of-the-art facilities.
  • Supporting future leaders of the hydrogen economy by leading the UK’s only Centre for Doctoral Training focused on Engineering Hydrogen Net Zero. 
  • Providing a skills exchange at the East Midlands Institute of Technology, degree level, doctoral and postdoctoral programmes.

Green hydrogen facility

A green hydrogen production facility launching September 2026 represents Phase 1 of The East Midlands Zero Carbon Innovation Centre on the ÿÈÕ³Ô¹Ï Science and Enterprise Park, following investment from East Midlands Freeport.

The demonstrator-scale facility provides green hydrogen testing and training.

X Lab Extreme

The X Lab Extreme offers unique capabilities in the UK, for researching, testing and developing a new generation of materials which can withstand, and function safely in, extreme environments. The Gleeble 3800 can test cryogenic quenching, ultra-high sustained temperature testing, and laser ultrasonic metrology. This is a one-of-a-kind facility, unique to the UK and Europe, is the first in the world to be open to external researchers and industry collaborators.
